NBA Superlatives: Greg Stiemsma

By: Pelicans.com

It says a lot about the youthful nature of the 2013-14 New Orleans Pelicans that despite only being in his third NBA campaign, center Greg Stiemsma is one of the club’s most seasoned players. With 19 career playoff games under his belt, Stiemsma trails only Ryan Anderson (20 games) in postseason experience. The 28-year-old Stiemsma and Anderson are also the only current Pelicans who have advanced past the second round of the NBA playoffs. Not surprisingly, several of Stiemsma’s favorite memories so far in the NBA come from the 2011-12 season, when he was a rookie reserve with the Boston Celtics:

Most memorable moment in the NBA: “The first game I started as a Celtic. I looked to my right and see Rajon Rondo and Ray Allen, then I looked to my left and saw Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett. That was pretty cool.”
Most memorable dunk in the NBA: “Not a whole lot of them. Maybe my first one in a preseason game with Boston. It was an outlet pass from Rajon Rondo for an and-one. That kind of got things moving for me that season.”
Most embarrassing moment in the NBA: “Emeka Okafor dunked on me last season. The ball kind of got tipped around. We both kind of paused, but then he went up and got me.”
Most surprising thing about the NBA as a rookie: “How hard the top guys work. You sometimes think that once guys make it to that level, they don’t put the time in, but it’s not true. They put the time in.”
Toughest player to face at his position: “Tim Duncan.”
Most underrated player in the NBA: “(Minnesota point guard) J.J. Barea, the things he does with how crafty he is and to be able to do what he can do at his size, is very impressive to me.”
Best uniforms in the NBA (besides the Pelicans’): “I really liked Minnesota’s all-black road uniforms. The Magic have some cool ones as well.”
Favorite road arena: “Dallas has a nice arena.”
Favorite road trip, based on the city: “Milwaukee, because it’s kind of home for me. I also like the city of Denver and have some family out there.”
